Captain Carrot and his Amazing Zoo Crew 4 (1982)
His name is… Mudd!
Muck-Monster madness fills the pages of this issue of Captain Carrot. The Swamp Thing parody issue seems to closely align with the release of the movie. I think Thomas and Shaw had enough time to see the movie and come up with this goofy spoof.
This great movie ad is on the inside cover.
Anyone who’s familiar with Captain Carrot is aware of the fun and whimsical tales that the Zoo Crew find themselves in. Their world is full of puns and names based on real/familiar sounding locations. I’m assuming the Okey Dokey Swamp is a reference to the Okefenokee Swamp in Georgia/Florida.
The short and skinny: half the Zoo Crew is on the hunt for a new headquarters while the other half is on the set of a new horror/thriller film.
The exposed zipper is a fun reference to the Swamp Thing film and the costume issues that plagued the film.
Filming goes awry when mud makeup is dumped into the swamp, creating an actual muck-monster who plagues the set of the movie.
Mudd, the muck-monster encounters the actors on set.
I love how similar the Mudd font is to the Swamp Thing logo.
The monster doesn’t quite pose a threat to anyone but the Zoo Crew vanquishes the mystical beast anyway. It’s too bad Mudd didn’t join the Zoo Crew, he would have made a great addition.
