Just over a year ago I started an instagram feed that coincides with this website, rootsoftheswampthing.com. Instagram allows me to quickly share my books and collectibles when I don’t have time to write a full post on the website. The RootsOfTheSwampThing instagram page has been a great way to meet fellow Swamp Thing fans and to share Swamp Thing information. I’m quickly approaching 2,000 followers and to show my appreciation and to celebrate Swamp Thing fandom I’m giving away the illusive Swamp Thing Halloween costume (1990).

The Halloween costume comes with the original mask but the mask is banged up quite a bit so I am not advertising it as part of the prize. The original mask, in better condition can be easily found on etsy or other internet based marketplaces for a very reasonable price. I’ve only come across this costume twice in my years of collecting and digging. This is sure to make you or a fellow Swamp Thing fan very happy.

Do you find comic book related movies to be more exciting/interesting than comic books? You usually have a lot more meat in the books, although it’s awesome to see your favorite characters on screen.
Who is your favorite comic character? Through good times and bad, what character you always go wild for? Swamp Thing, always and forever.

even though I know yover read it, Nancy Collins run on the book. Her characterization is amazing.

Although I think an article would be sufficient for questions it can be more appealing for fans to see the creator talk about their work simple because the expressions and emphasis they use when they talk! I only own Saga of The Swamp Thing but I constantly reread it so I would have to say around 4-5 times a week, with that being said I prefer comics over movies but seeing Swamp Thing immortalized in a film with all the modern special effects of today would be amazing and is something I would definitely want to see. Although Swamp Thing is my favorite hero I like the Floronic Man most of all as a character, he’s such an interesting person and his alienation from both the green and the world of man is such a sad thing I can’t help but pity him and love him for trying to do right by the side he feels would be more accepting of him. Even though the green will never accept him fully or choose him as their champion it’s the world he wants to fight for. Saga of The Swamp Thing is definitely a good read 10/10 would recommend!

I would love to see an interview/learn what makes the comic makers tick.
I usually read 1-2 trades per week. I prefer the trades to the single issues so I can really wear them in without worrying about damaging a collectors item. Side note: saga of the swamp thing is the only complete set I have of single issues.
Comics over movies any day of the week.
Swampthing is my favorite character across all mediums of entertainment. I bought the first couple issues because the art looked good and fell in love with the story. Recently I have gotten into collecting the movies and figures as well as the books.

3. It really depends in how they do it. I like to see a live action representation of the book but I wouldn’t have that excitement if it wasn’t for the book. And it depends because there are some things in comics that the movies will never do. Example I’m really excited for the upcoming He-man/ThunderCats crossover in October. There will never be a movie of that
4. Swamp thing. I have a feeling you’ve read them all but my favorite is between the Alan Moore run or Nancy Collins

4. Hellboy! Is my go to no matter what character that I can read over and over again. Mike Mignolas universe is fantastic! For a book to recommend I have really enjoyed “the wild hunt” lately.

Do you find comic book related movies to be more exciting/interesting than comic books? Hmmm. It is exciting to see the film, but the new stories, every week are more interesting.
Who is your favorite comic character? Through good times and bad, what character do you always go wild for? No lie: Swamp Thing. The mind of Alec Holland trapped in that body ALWAYS resonated with a cro-magnon kid like me.
Sub-question: What book (featuring the above character) would you recommend that I read? I highly recommend, and this may be weird, the novelization of Swamp Thing the film and the novelization of Return of Swamp Thing. Very interesting take.

1. I find you usually get more information from the articles than the interviews. Creators tend to play things close to the vest.
2. I honestly have no clue.. At least 10, I would imagine. More when I have the extra time.
3. I love the movies, but comics over EVERYTHING.
4. Swamp Thing from now until the end of time. Since you’ve read all the Swamp Thing stuff, I’d recommend Shade The Changing Man vol 1. American Scream. Total mindfuck and absolutely beautiful in its visual chaos.

1. It could be either or. Sometimes interviews fall flat when a writer may not be that interested in doing it to begin with.
2. My pull list is about 10-15 books a week. Give or take.
3. Most of the movies are fun and entertaining. But I don’t know if they have ever beaten out the printed stories. There is just something about the experience of holding a comic and reading through it over and over again.
4. Swamp Thing is definitely my favorite character overall. But I have an issue picking up random issues that he may guest star in to only read that issue. I hate diving into something half way through. Don’t get me wrong, I still purchase issue for the appearance haha. Most of my favorites are indie titles. Saga, Manifest Destiny, Hellboy, The Humans, Paper Girls, Space Riders, etc. But I’ll never turn down a good Daredevil title.

1. Unless they’re the type of personality where their life has been as interesting as one of their stories, I would prefer an interview.
2.I usually read around eight a week. There are the books/creators that I love and automatically purchase and then on the side I’ll read friends copies digitally and the ones that I enjoy and want to support I will go to my LCS and pick up.
3.I have to break these sorts of questions down into publishers. For DC, I’ll read any Batman book but there is nothing better than a good Superman story (it’s just that they are so few and far apart). I love Swamp Thing, having discovered Alan Moore’s run at a time when all I thought existed was big superhero stuff. For Marvel, my favorite character is Howard the Duck and my favorite superhero is Daredevil. My overall favorite comic is Miracleman.
4.For Superman (other than All-Star Superman), I would recommend Superman For All Seasons and Kryptonite. Tim Sale’s bulky rendering of the character is my preferred version and he makes Ma and Pa Kent so wonderful. For Howard the Duck, issue #8 of the current series brought back Bev and was really touching. For Daredevil, Mark Waid’s recent run has something for everyone.

I read about 8 to 10 issues a week. More if I have a good TPB
Comics are better than movies every time. I love the tactile quality of an old comic book. The art and nostalgia of them.
Swampy will always be my fave. No matter what. But for the purposes of this I’ll also say Booster Gold. Whomever treats this character can never go wrong. Very human and cheeky. The 80s original run is only available in ‘DC showcase’, phone book black and white print. By Dan jurgans. The story and character are so well written that the lack of colour doesn’t matter. Amazing comic run.
