I’ve had the Swamp Thing animated series style guide on my radar for a number of years. I’d tracked down scans of the pages but never knew if they were available or still existed. I waited and waited for it to pop-up on ebay, or another collector would surface with them framed in their living room. Last year the style guide, by Alfredo Alcala, finally popped up for auction. I was overwhelmed with joy that it finally surfaced. The final auction price was too rich for my blood but I was extremely happy just to know it was indeed out there. Well, I’m proud to finally be able to announce that I was fortunate enough to obtain 3 of the 9 pages from the style guide this week. They are original illustrations (more like sketches) by Alfredo Alcala, who worked on over 125 Swamp Thing books. The influences from Alcala’s style guide (especially in how he draws animal anatomy/proportions) can be seen on much of the merchandised collectibles from the early 90s.
